ABI Value

Peripheral Artery Disease(PAD) severity Recommendation
>1.4 Noncompressible vessel. The vessel is either very healthy or severely calcified. Use ultrasound waveform for further differentiation. If severely calcified, refer to vascular specialist

1.0-1.4

Normal

None

0.9-1.0

Borderline

None

0.8-0.9

Mild PAD

Treat risk factors

0.5-0.8

Moderate PAD

Refer to vascular specialist

<0.5

Severe PAD

Refer to vascular specialist

Note:  An ABI is calculated for each leg. The ABI value is determined by taking the higher pressure of the 2 arteries at the ankle, divided by the brachial arterial systolic pressure. In calculating the ABI, the higher of the two brachial systolic pressure measurements is used.
